96 In memory of the 97 Memorial to the Hillsborough disaster (15 April 1989). 96 supporters died on the day; the toll was later updated to 97. Commemorated club-wide (eternal flames on the crest, the Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield); not a worn shirt number.

1959 Bill Shankly appointed manager, founding the 'Boot Room' culture that built the modern club.
1974 Bob Paisley succeeds Shankly and goes on to win three European Cups (1977, 1978, 1981).
1985 Heysel Stadium disaster at the European Cup final vs Juventus (Brussels); 39 fans died and English clubs were banned from Europe for five years.
1989 Hillsborough disaster (15 April) at the FA Cup semi-final vs Nottingham Forest; 97 Liverpool supporters ultimately died. A 2016 inquest ruled the victims unlawfully killed.
2005 'Miracle of Istanbul' - Champions League final comeback from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties.
