Career by season

Van Dijk arrives in North America as one of only a handful of squad players who experienced the 2014 third-place finish and the 2022 quarter-final exit, and the only one who has captained the side through both. Koeman builds around him: a high line, a sweeper-keeper behind, and pace either side — a system that lives or dies on Van Dijk’s reading of the game. With Group F featuring Isak, Gyökeres, and Kubo across three opponents, his duels-won record will be the single most-quoted stat of the Dutch group stage.
His tournament arc is almost certainly his last as captain. A deep run would put him level with De Boer-era legends in caps and beyond them in silverware; an early exit would be remembered as the close of an era. Either way, the No. 4 shirt is his to define.
Strengths
- Aerial dominance and one-on-one defending
- Long-range passing to break the press
- Game management and on-pitch leadership
Recent form
Anchored Liverpool's 2025-26 title defence; still the metronome of the Dutch back line despite age.
Was almost forced to quit football at 19 after appendicitis-related complications nearly killed him during his Groningen breakthrough season.
