McTominay’s role in Scotland’s qualification means his presence at the World Cup will be received in Glasgow and Edinburgh as a coronation more than an arrival. Clarke uses him as the more advanced of two midfielders in a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1, free to make the late runs that Napoli unlocked for him. Brazil’s high line and Morocco’s wing-back-driven attack both leave central areas vulnerable to exactly the kind of run McTominay specialises in.
If Scotland are going to win a knockout-stage match for the first time in tournament history, the goal is most likely coming off McTominay’s right boot.
Strengths
- Late runs into the penalty area
- Aerial threat on set pieces — both ends of the pitch
- Big-moment scoring instinct
