Singh is New Zealand’s No. 10, the player Bazeley turns to when the All Whites need to play through pressure rather than around it. The Bayern years did not deliver the Bundesliga career he hoped for, but they sharpened his technical level beyond any other creative player available to the national team.
In a 4-2-3-1 he plays just behind Wood, threading passes for the captain or Cacace’s runs. Against compact defensive blocks from Iran and the technical challenge of Belgium’s press, he is the All Whites’ single most-important attacking midfielder.
