Mohanad Ali is the partner-in-attack who gives Iraq a second goalscoring threat. He has been the long-prophesied “next great Iraqi forward” since his 2019 Asian Cup breakout, and while his career has not quite matched that early ceiling, he remains one of the few Iraqi forwards with double-digit international goals.
His role in North America is as a roaming attacker around Hussein — drifting wide, finding space in the half-spaces, providing an alternative outlet to the pressed-in target-man play. If Iraq are going to score against Group I opposition, the chances are likely to come from these two combining.
Strengths
- Direct dribbling at full speed
- Secondary scoring threat alongside Hussein
Recent form
Al-Duhail regular; established as Iraq's second-choice attacker behind Hussein.
Won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Young Player of the Tournament award as a 19-year-old.
