Salah’s relationship with Egyptian football has been the defining sports story of his country for a decade. He carried the Pharaohs to Russia 2018 with a 95th-minute penalty against the Republic of Congo, missed Qatar 2022 after a heartbreaking play-off penalty shoot-out loss to Senegal, and qualified Egypt for North America 2026 from the front of every press conference. The Hossam Hassan record — 68 international goals — will fall in this tournament if he scores at all.
The system around him is built for one purpose: get the ball to the captain’s left foot inside the opposition half. Trezeguet stretches play from the left so Salah can occupy the right half-space; Marmoush makes the runs Salah used to make; Emam Ashour finds him between the lines. If Egypt are going to advance from a group with Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand, it will be because their captain found two or three of his vintage moments at 33.
Strengths
- Inside-cut shooting from the right-wing channel
- Penalty-area finishing with the left foot
- Big-moment composure in qualifying
