Stamenić is the engine of New Zealand’s midfield and the long-term replacement for Marco Rojas as the All Whites’ technical centerpiece. His Serbian and Greek experience has accelerated his development; at 24 he is already a multiple-time domestic champion.
Bazeley plays him in a midfield two alongside Joe Bell, with Stamenić doing the carrying and the long-range shooting and Bell doing the screening. Against Belgium’s De Bruyne and Tielemans midfield, his composure will be tested as severely as anyone’s in this squad.
