Guéhi is the centre-back England needed when Maguire’s international career ended — quick enough to defend a high line, calm enough to play out, and left-footed enough to give Tuchel a natural left-centre-back to pair with Stones. The City move has accelerated his game in possession; he is now passing into midfield more often and more cleanly than at any point at Palace. The one tournament caveat is set-piece defending — he is excellent at attacking ones but has been beaten in the air at his near post in friendlies, something Croatia’s Kramarić and Perišić will have noted.
Strengths
- one-on-one defending against quick forwards
- left-footed line-breaking passes
- aerial dominance from set pieces
- leadership and communication
