Lucas’s value to this France squad is twofold: he is the senior cover for both left-back and either centre-back position, and he is one of the few outfielders in the group with a World Cup winner’s medal. At 30 he is no longer first-choice anywhere, but his ability to cover three positions credibly makes him a near-lock for the 26-man list. Expect him to come on late to shut down games or to start the third group match if France have already qualified.
