Koulibaly remains the defensive cornerstone of a Senegal team that conceded the fewest goals in CAF qualifying. At 34 he is no longer the world-elite centre-back of his Napoli peak, but he reads the game with the kind of clarity that makes a less-explosive defender still extremely difficult to play through. He partners a much younger right-sided CB in the current setup, which means he plays closer to the centre and absorbs the lion’s share of the aerial and physical work.
The 2026 tournament is almost certainly his last as a starter. He’ll turn 35 during the group stage and is unlikely to feature in another World Cup cycle. Senegal’s defensive ceiling against France and Norway will be dictated almost entirely by how much running he has in his legs in the third week of June.
Strengths
- Aerial dominance against direct centre-forwards
- Reading of the game — anticipation in 1v1 situations
- Leadership and tactical organisation of the back line
Recent form
Al-Hilal regular; former captain still organising the Senegal defence.
Was the leading vote-getter for FIFA's 2019 World XI among defenders despite playing for a Napoli side that finished second in Serie A.
