Tuchel’s tactical question with Bellingham is the same one Carlo Ancelotti and Xabi Alonso wrestled with at club level — is he a number ten, a left-eight, or a roaming free role? In the May friendlies Tuchel landed on a left-eight position where Bellingham can both receive on the half-turn and run beyond Kane. With Rice anchoring behind him and Eze offering an alternate creator on the left, Bellingham is freed from defensive responsibility in a way England rarely permitted under Southgate. If England go deep in this tournament, the highlights reel will almost certainly start with him.
Strengths
- arrivals in the box from deep
- press resistance under pressure
- long-range shooting
- tournament temperament beyond his age
Recent form
Real Madrid finished the 2025-26 season strongly; Bellingham scored in three of England's last four qualifiers and is in form.
Has worn the number 22 shirt at Real Madrid in honour of his birthday (29 June) and his Birmingham-retired number 22 — the Blues retired the shirt when he left aged 17, the first time a club had done so for an outgoing teenager.
