Pickford’s reputation in England has rebounded from the post-2018 wobble to the point where his shootout record is regarded as a tournament asset in its own right. His distribution under Tuchel is more conservative than in the Southgate years — fewer risky short build-ups, more diagonals to Saka — and the back four ahead of him (Guéhi, Stones, Reece James, plus whichever left-back) is more settled than at any point since 2018. The number behind the number remains his most useful England trait: he has never been beaten in a major-tournament shootout that England have lost.
Strengths
- penalty-shootout specialism
- shot-stopping reflexes at close range
- diagonal distribution to wingers
- vocal organisation of the back four
