Hassan is Iraq’s tournament captain and the keeper who has anchored the back line through the AFC and intercontinental playoff campaigns. At 35 he is one of the most experienced keepers at the tournament, with 100 caps and a club career that has been almost entirely played at Al-Zawraa in Baghdad.
The challenge facing him in North America is the largest of any keeper in Group I. France’s front three, Norway’s Haaland-led attack, and Senegal’s pace will produce more shots and crosses than he will have faced in any single match of his career. Iraq’s tournament floor depends on Hassan keeping the deficits manageable — every game they lose narrowly is a game they could have won.
Strengths
- Command of the area on crosses
- Shot-stopping from distance
- Captain-level organisation of the back four
