Wirtz is the player Nagelsmann’s whole attacking architecture is designed around — a true No. 10 who lets Musiala drift wide and lets Havertz play as a connecting striker rather than a creator. The question that hangs over this Germany side is whether he and Musiala can share a pitch without one of them needing to play a wider, less natural role. The early signs from qualifying were that Wirtz central, Musiala left, and Sané or Karl right is the configuration that gets the most out of all three.
Strengths
- between-the-lines positioning
- left-footed finishing from outside the box
- tight-space ball retention
- press resistance
