Mendy is the kind of late-career goalkeeper who saves teams from group-stage exits. He won AFCON 2021 with two penalty-shootout heroics, played every minute of Qatar 2022, and remains the comfortable first-choice for Pape Thiaw. The drop from Champions League-level club football to the Saudi Pro League is the obvious concern, but the international form has been steady through qualifying.
Senegal will face an attack from France that nobody can fully contain. Mendy’s job will be to keep the score close enough that Mané, Sarr, and Ndiaye get one chance — which is enough for this Senegal team to win any single match. He is among the best one-on-one goalkeepers in the tournament.
Strengths
- Shot-stopping at his near post
- Command of the area on crosses
- Distribution under press, comfortable building short
