Critical to Martínez’s build-up phase — Portugal play out from the back with their goalkeeper as an extra outfield passer, and Costa’s range and composure are why that system works. He is also the team’s penalty insurance, having proved at Euro 2024 that knockout shootouts won’t unravel him.
At 26 he is in his prime, and the lack of a club move is increasingly attributed to Porto’s reluctance to sell rather than any cap on his level. Will need to handle the high-pressure World Cup environment where Portugal are genuine title contenders for the first time since 2006.
