Laporte’s left foot is the structural reason De la Fuente persists with a left-footed centre-back next to right-footed Cubarsí — the diagonals to Nico Williams’s foot are a key Spain pattern. His Saudi detour cost him a half-yard of recovery pace but added a calm he didn’t have during his City years; he is now the dressing-room counterweight to Rodri’s intensity. Expect him to start every match unless Spain are chasing a game.
Strengths
- left-footed long diagonals into Yamal's channel
- press-resistant first touch
- aerial dominance at set pieces
- vocal organisation of the line
Recent form
Settled back into the San Mamés crowd's favour through spring 2026; minutes more managed than at his City peak but high quality.
His Spanish international debut in 2021 came roughly a decade after he was first courted by France's youth setup — he chose la Roja partly because his mother is from Agen near the Spanish border but his footballing identity was always Basque.
