Tchouaméni is France’s defensive pivot in everything but name — the man who turns the back four into a back three when he drops to receive, who breaks the first line of opposition press with a clipped diagonal, and who allows Rabiot and whoever the No. 8 is to push forward without worrying about the gap behind. He has been the youngest non-attacker in France’s preferred XI for two tournaments now.
Camavinga’s omission shifts more midfield responsibility onto him. The early indications from qualifying are that Koné slots in next to him as a runner, leaving Tchouaméni as the sole anchor — a role he played all of 2024-25 in Madrid. He needs to stay fit; there is no like-for-like replacement on this roster.
Strengths
- Long-range distribution — switches play with the outside of his right foot
- Aerial duels and set-piece defending
- Disciplined screening in front of the centre-backs
Recent form
Real Madrid's preferred deep midfielder; partnership with Camavinga (omitted from this squad) replaced for France by Manu Koné.
Scored his first senior France goal in the 2022 World Cup round-of-16 win over Poland — an outside-of-the-boot curler from 25 yards.
