Franchise History

Founded 1901 — University of Connecticut men's basketball began play in the 1900-01 season. The program rose to national prominence under Jim Calhoun (hired 1986) and is one of the sport's modern dynasties.

Huskies of Honor Honored players (jerseys/banners), not retired numbers UConn does not retire jersey numbers in the pro sense. The program honors legends via the 'Huskies of Honor' wall (banners at Gampel Pavilion / the XL Center), launched in the 2006-07 season.

Defining moments

1986 Jim Calhoun hired; over 26 seasons he builds UConn into a national power and wins 3 titles (1999, 2004, 2011).
1990 The 'Dream Season' - Tate George's buzzer-beater vs Clemson sparks UConn's first deep NCAA run (Elite Eight).
1999 First national championship, beating top-ranked Duke.
2013 UConn leaves the original Big East for the American Athletic Conference amid conference realignment.
2018 Dan Hurley hired as head coach (March 2018).
2020 UConn returns to the rebuilt Big East Conference.
2024 Back-to-back national titles (2023 & 2024), the first repeat champion since Florida 2006-07.

1999 NCAA champions (34-2)

First national title; Richard 'Rip' Hamilton named Most Outstanding Player after beating top-ranked Duke.

2004 NCAA champions

Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon led the second title; Okafor was the Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

2011 NCAA champions

Kemba Walker carried UConn on a run of 11 straight wins (Big East and NCAA tournaments) to the title.

2014 NCAA champions

A 7-seed run led by Shabazz Napier; UConn's men and women both won titles that year.

2023 NCAA champions

Dan Hurley's first title; a dominant tournament run with margins not seen in decades.

2024 NCAA champions (back-to-back)

Repeat champions, the first since Florida 2006-07; Tristen Newton and Donovan Clingan starred.

2026 NCAA runner-up

Reached the national championship game (3rd title game in 4 years) but lost to Michigan 69-63.

Note The 2017-18 season was vacated by the NCAA: all on-court results from that year were wiped (the official record became 0-18) following Level I/II recruiting and impermissible-benefits violations during Kevin Ollie's tenure. Ollie was fired for just cause in 2018; an arbitrator later ruled in his favor in a wrongful-termination dispute, but the NCAA penalties (including the vacated season) stand.
