Sarr is the vertical threat that gives Senegal a tactical alternative to Mané’s possession-friendly approach. When the team needs to spring a counter-attack — and against France they will need to spring several — Sarr is the player Pape Thiaw turns to. The Crystal Palace partnership with Marc Guéhi has sharpened his defensive work-rate without dulling his pace.

At 28 he is in his physical peak. The trade with Mané’s positioning is essentially this: Mané plays deeper and combines, Sarr stays high and stretches the field. The combination has been the backbone of the Senegal attack for two qualifying cycles.

Crystal Palace regular; Senegal's most explosive wide forward.

His shootout winner against Egypt sent Senegal to Qatar 2022 — and broke Mohamed Salah's heart, since he had scored a penalty in the same shootout.
