Álvarez is the player around whom Aguirre has organised the whole project — the No.6 who lets the front line take risks because he and Montes hoover everything else up. He grew at Ajax under demanding coaches and matured at West Ham across four Premier League campaigns, and his appointment as captain wasn’t a token gesture but a tactical one: this team plays through him.
The Fenerbahçe season has been bumpy. Injuries cost him minutes, and the arrival of Kanté complicated his role under José Mourinho. The fitness question is real, but Aguirre doesn’t have an alternative profile in the squad — when fit, he is non-negotiable.
Strengths
- Tackling and interceptions
- Aerial duels in midfield
- Pivot positioning and screening

Wore the armband from Aguirre's very first matchday in charge and has been undisputed captain ever since, despite still being only 28 at this World Cup.
